SUBJUNCTIVE
Definition
The subjunctive is the verb form used to express a wish, a
suggestion, a command, or a condition that is contrary to fact.
1. As if/ as though used to explain unreal condition or
without fact.
2. Wish, would rather, and if only used to explain a hope or
wish.
Formula
Present
Subjunctive
a. Wish
S1 + Wish + S2 + Past Tense
Example:
I
wish she were here.
(but,
She isn’t here)
b. As if /As though
S1 + Verb1 (present) + as if/as though + S2 + Verb2
Example:
She acts as if she were beautiful.
(but
She isn’t beautiful)
c. Would
rather
S1+ Would rather + S2 + Verb2
Example:
I would rather I stayed with my parents.
(but I
don’t stay with my parents)
d. If only
If only + S + Verb2
Example:
If only I were rich.
(but I’m not rich)
Past Subjunctive
a. Wish
S1 + wished + S2 + Had + Verb3
Example :
I wished had gone
abroad
(but I didn’t
go abroad)
b. As
if/As Though
S1 + Verb2 + as if + Had + Verb3
Example :
He acted as if he had owned the place.
(but he didn’t own the place)
c. Would
rather
S1 + would rather + S2 + Had + Verb3
Example:
I would rather she had gone to my party.
(but she
didn’t go to my party)
d. If only
If only + S + Had + Verb3/been
Example:
If only Rachel
had been at home last night.
(but Rachel
was not at home last night)
